This study examines the vault system, a significant element in the architectural and structural fields of applied engineering sciences since the dawn of architectural history across human civilizations. It explores the functions of vaults, the challenges they face despite their importance, and the challenges they encounter. This study delves into their remarkable identity as a defining feature of traditional and structural architecture, identifying obstacles that hinder their integration into contemporary architecture. It interprets the concept of the vault, known as “Kamour” in Amazigh, as a structural system and an active, interactive element. This system serves as a foundation for local architectural heritage and its ideal urban characteristics. The research problem lies in defining the general concept of vault systems and the theoretical framework for the study. This framework aims to guide the study towards practical application and the desired outcomes. The study examines the vault (“ikumar”), its adoption, and its integration into the evolution of architecture, building upon past experiences and future aspirations. The scientific issue is addressed through a partial study defining the vault throughout the history of architecture across civilizations and its concept the study of basements, from an architectural, structural, and climatic perspective, departs from traditional approaches. By examining existing models of basements within the study area and evaluating their architectural, climatic, and structural success, researchers will employ two methodologies: descriptive-historical and analytical.
