Abstract

Agriculture in desert and oasis regions is a cornerstone of food security and sustainable development, particularly in countries with vast arid areas and scarce surface water resources. The Awjila Oasis, with its groundwater reserves and rich agricultural heritage, stands as a unique example of agricultural production in the heart of the Libyan desert. Tomatoes are a strategic and essential daily crop for consumers, making their expansion an attractive economic option for farmers. However, this option faces a number of complex environmental and climatic challenges. This research primarily aims to understand the current state of tomato cultivation in the Awjila Oasis and its surrounding environmental conditions, and to measure the economic indicators and profitability resulting from tomato production in the region. The research employs a descriptive-analytical approach, reviewing relevant economic and agricultural literature and theories, and relies heavily on fieldwork. The study concluded that tomato cultivation in the Awjila Oasis is characterized by good economic viability and rewarding returns for farmers, driven by strong and sustainable local demand. Environmental challenges (primarily water scarcity, high temperatures, and poor soil) constitute the greatest obstacle threatening the sustainability of this crop and increasing production costs.
