Abstract

This study aimed to examine the role of digital media in shaping the mental image of reconstruction projects in Libya through a field study on the efforts of the Libya Development and Reconstruction Fund among students at Al-Marqab University. The research sought to identify the level of students’ exposure to digital media content related to the Fund’s activities, analyze the nature of the circulated communication messages, measure their impact on shaping the mental image, and explore students’ perceptions of reconstruction projects and development efforts. The study adopted a descriptive–analytical approach and utilized an electronic questionnaire administered to a stratified random sample of 377 university students, of which 354 valid responses were retrieved for statistical analysis. The findings indicated that the level of exposure to digital content was moderate, with a noticeable reliance on multiple platforms and indirect circulation paths within the digital environment, compared to limited regular follow-up of official sources. The results also revealed that digital media messages are characterized by visual attractiveness, simplification of technical concepts, and reinforcement of trust in reconstruction efforts, although the updating of detailed project information ranked relatively lower. The study confirmed a relatively strong impact of digital media content in forming a positive mental image of the Fund and its projects, particularly in enhancing understanding of objectives, perceiving developmental impact, and strengthening trust. However, certain gaps remain regarding institutional, technical, and interactive communication aspects. The study recommends developing youth-oriented digital media strategies, ensuring continuous information updates, and strengthening institutional engagement to build a more comprehensive and sustainable mental image.
